Vineyards

All Hall vineyards are located in Napa Valley. California's Napa Valley is renowned for its fine wines and unique terroir. The valley is only 30 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. Although this area may seem small for growing such a wide variety of wines, the opposite is true. The region offers a truly diverse terroir, to such an extent that there are 16 distinctive appellations or sub-regions, each with its own unique soil and climate. This is what makes Napa Valley a truly unique place for growing the best grapes.

Napa Valley is famous for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, but even a single variety can taste completely different depending on the diversity of the individual appellations and their climates and terroirs. From individual soil types to temperature fluctuations to the influence of ocean currents in the form of cold winds or fog from the Pacific Ocean. All of this helps shape the characteristics of the grapes from each region and gives Cabernet Sauvignon its unique expression. Many wineries focus on specific regions, but Hall sources wine from across the valley. This results in unique wines from individual appellations and vineyards that capture the essence of each location and its uniqueness.

Hall Wines' own vineyards stretch from the riverbeds at the bottom of the valley to the tops of the hills and cover approximately 50 acres of classic Bordeaux varieties. Small vineyards are used for cultivation to produce low-yield, high-concentration fruit. Each block of vineyard is then managed using agricultural practices tailored to the variety, terroir, clone, rootstock, and orientation for the highest quality fruit. Sustainable cultivation is a matter of course to ensure the health of the vineyards and the optimal character of the fruit.

The seven vineyards of Hall Wines:

  • Sacrashe Vineyard, Ruhterford,
  • Bergfeld Vineyard, St. Helena,
  • Hardester Vineyard, Napa Valley,
  • Cook Vineyard, Napa Valley,
  • Dellar-Friedkin Vineyard, Napa Valley
  • Rainin Vineyard, Diamond Mountain,
  • Beller Vineyard, Mt. Veeder.

Sacrashe Vineyard

Sacrashe was the first vineyard that Craig and Kathryn Hall bought in Napa Valley in 1995. The terroir of Rutherford was absolutely enchanting, which is why they not only built the Hall Rutherford Winery here, but also built their home.

The Sacrashe vineyard has a higher radiation value, which means that the sun shines longer here than in other areas. Daily temperature differences allow the fruit to ripen at a steady pace. The soils here are volcanic, known as tuff.

The undulating topography creates numerous microclimates and slopes. The terroir at the top of Rutherford Hill creates difficult growing conditions and limits the vitality and yield of each vine to a maximum of 3 tons per acre. Rutherford berries are small and concentrated with intense flavors and tannins. The wines are exceptionally rich, expansive, and structured. The concentrated fruit retains a focused purity, and the fine tannins create a balanced structure.

Bergfeld Vineyard

The Bergfeld Vineyard in St. Helena is a historic vineyard planted in 1859. It is one of the first vineyards in the Napa Valley. The St. Helena Valley is protected from western winds and warmed by heat reflected from the slopes. This makes St. Helena one of the warmest sub-regions in Napa Valley. The Bergfeld Vineyard is located in the valley on the site of an old tributary of the Napa River. The well-drained gravelly soils here increase the concentration and intensity of the red grapevines. Red wines from this area are typically ripe and jammy, balanced with a firm and rich tannin structure.

Hadrester Ranch Vineyard

Hardester Ranch is located just beyond the majestic Howell Mountain. It consists of 144 acres of select Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Thanks to very warm summers, cool winters, low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine, the fruit is lively and concentrated, rich and juicy. These fruits are the ideal basis for Hall cuvée.

Cook Vineyard

The 25-acre Cook Vineyard is located in the northeastern part of the St. Helena AVA. Originally planted with Zinfandel, Cook Vineyard now produces a classic, fruity Cabernet Sauvignon with dark fruit notes, balanced acidity, and firm tannins for long aging.

Dellar-Friedkin Vineyard

This very rocky vineyard is specially located for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The climate here is moderately warm, with afternoon sea breezes cooling the warmer air from the surrounding slopes. Thanks to this climate, Cabernet grapes are classically fruity, delicate with rich tones of dark fruit and balanced acidity.

Rainin Vineyard

The small wine estate on the steep, rocky volcanic soils of Diamond Mountain is owned by Jen and Frances Rainin. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is used to produce an exclusive wine in limited quantities.

Beller Vineyard

The Beller Vineyard covers an area of 17.1 acres on top of a hill that stretches northward from the main slopes of Mount Veeder. Eight separate blocks are planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small percentage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The location of the vineyard and its open orientation on the hilltop limits the shade provided by forest cover. As a result, the grapes grown in this vineyard have a fruity, juicy flavor that reflects the abundance of sunlight.
